Packing

We will assume the presentation is not at your office. Its a good idea to keep a checklist at hand when packing. Putting things together the day before you leave is better than at the last minute.

  1. Dry Run.

Set up your equipment. Even if you do not have to bring everything, set it up. Make sure the connectors are snug.

  2. Separate the equipment.

You will most likely be packing into two cases. One for the computer and its accessories, and one for the projector and its accessories. Divide the equipment into these two groups. Make sure that all connector cords are in the correct group. Don't let your less thorough packing associate get to her presentation and find you have the projector cable in your computer bag.

  3. Pack Neatly.

Have a designated place for everything and stick to that plan. This is expensive and sensitive equipment, so pack to protect the connectors and optics. This habit will also let you pack quickly when finished.

  4. Pack an extra CD.

Even if you have your presentation on your hard drive, burn a copy onto CD, make sure that it has any supplemental files, and bring it with you.

  5. Pack extra extension cords.

Always have one for your computer, but also bring one for your projector. An extra cord (with quick-ties) will allow you to place the computer and project at their optimum for your presentation rather than be limited to the room layout. Remember to keep loose cords from foot paths.

  6. Pack the Paper.

Pack a sufficient number of copies of your paper, brochure, research reports, etc. for the intended number of viewers. Pack a few extras in case word gets out that you will be speaking and your fans show up. Always have a supply of business cards.

  7. Get a Haircut.

Get a haircut, a shine, a manicure, or an ice cream cone. Everyone seems to have some ritual that fills the gap between ready and go. Whatever yours is, do it. You're ready.
